  • According to leading phone blog site, The Kindle has quickly become one of the most popular platforms for reading eBooks and other online material that can be purchased through the Amazon bookstore. Now, a number of sources are claiming that Amazon has been selling eBooks that are free to the public and have had their licensing information stripped. These books can come in a variety of different formats through their service including ePub, Kindle format and even in HTML.

Some of the eBooks have been made available through Project Gutenberg, a project that is focused on providing free eBooks online. It is the largest and first collection of its kind. Project Gutenberg also employs a number of volunteers that are not paid for their services, so it is strange that Amazon would attempt to use these same ebooks that are available to the public for gain.

The selling of these eBooks that have been re-branded is not illegal, but is it ethical? That is the question that critics are now asking Amazon. Charging someone for something that they acquired for free certainly will rub some of their users the wrong way, especially those that paid money for the books. The truth of the matter is that selling the books for profit isn’t even against the Project Gutenberg licensing terms.

In response to the allegations against the company an Amazon Spokeswoman replied by saying that the books were not uploaded by Amazon itself and instead were uploaded by third parties using their self serve platform that they have provided for the distribution of ebooks online. Amazon has not committed to removing the books from their store but if they garner much more press attention there is a good chance that they could decide to remove them in an effort to avoid the bad publicity that they have created for the largest online retailer in the world.

  • Are you still anxiously awaiting the next release of a Symbian 3 device that makes full use of the platform that Symbian has provided? With the Nokia X7-00, you will finally get the chance to check out a device that makes use of all of the features that are available on the unlocked cell phone. The phone has a very interesting, futuristic design that should make it appeal to younger crowds, but don’t let the gimmicky design fool you; the Nokia X7-00 is very intriguing and looks like it could be a great smart phone, the first of its kind to utilize the Symbian^3 technology.

A video made its way online earlier in the day that has been quickly taken down from a number of different mirror sites that shows the phone playing a racing video game. The Symbian^3 differs from other Symbian devices because it features 4 home screens instead of the standard three that typically come with most Symbian devices. In the video that made its way online today it appears that the phone has four different speakers that allow you to play volume at a fairly high level, according to the person narrating the video.

The phone also features a 360x640 display which is fairly small when compared to other smart devices, as well as a microUSB port and an 8 megapixel camera. Unfortunately, the user the video claims that the battery can not be replaced by the user in the same way that the iPhone 4 unlocked can not be replaced. It will be interesting to see how much attention the Nokia X7-00 garners as we get closer to the release date of the device. Nokia has been quick to get the video removed from a number of different sites as it appears but you can expect the video to be widely available in the coming weeks.

  • For fans who are eagerly awaiting the iPad 2, a number of rumors about the features that will be included have made their way to the web over the course of the last few days. Although you shouldn’t believe everything you hear about a product as large as the iPad 2, you have to believe that some of the rumors that have made their way online have some sort of truth behind them, or at least some safe bets as far as what features will be included. A recent article in a Chinese newspaper has shed some light on the features that Apple fans can expect int he upcoming version of the iPad.

First of all, the article said that the iPad will include a Retina Display much like the one that was featured on the unlocked iPhone 4. This provides users with higher quality screen sand video and seems like a natural next step for Apple in the development of their iPad.

The article also stated that the iPad 2 will feature a front facing camera for FaceTime video chat support, which also seems like a logical step for Apple. Most surprisingly, the report stated that the iPad 2 would feature a USB port, which is something that no previous Apple product has had. All of the data that is transferred between Apple products and PC’s and other computer go through the charging cord which also features a one-sided USB connection. It doesn’t seem likely that Apple will break from their current mold, but it would certainly be interesting and to the advantage of the user for the iPad to have a USB port to make for easier transferring of data between computers and the tablet device. It is a feature that many fans would be excited to have, but doesn’t seem to be something that would be beneficial for Apple, given the popularity of their smart devices.

  • Steve Jobs Speaks on Wireless Printing
Posted on November 25, 2010 by Pure Mobile

Steve Jobs usually makes it a point to release a public comment on all of the feature upgrades of their devices and attempt to clearly explain why it will help the masses and more specifically their users. With Apple announcing their AirPrint features for iphone 4 unlocked that will support a number of Hewlett Packard printers, it was Jobs to spread the word about the fleshing out of the features, but he chose an odd way to do it. Instead of making a press announcement, Jobs reportedly replied to a single email to get the message out.

The email asked Jobs why he was only allowed to print on eleven different printers and inquired about when more printers would be made available. Jobs replied to the email saying that “lots more were coming soon,” and also said that “It takes time to make a giant leap in driverless printing, which is huge.”

He does have a point. Behind the surface, all of the unlocked iPhones 4 will have to have some sort of universal driver that can be read by the printers and allow them to print the information from the iPhone. Although only eleven are available now, as Apple is able to make deals with other companies you can bet that compatibility will be fleshed out and more printers will be included with the AirPrint feature.

It will be interesting to see fi Jobs addresses the email. As of right now there is no confirmation that he actually sent it and it should be taken as a rumor at this point, but the answer does seem like one that Jobs would give to this question. Driverless printing is indeed a huge step forward and it will take time for AirPrint to be fleshed out and allow for more printers. HP is expected to add compatibility for a number of their other printers in the very near future.

  • Acer has referred to their new smart device as both a smart phone and a tablet because of the size of the screen. The 4.8 inch screen on the phone is huge compared to other phones and will even be larger than the unlocked Dell Streak, which was highly coveted when it was announced because of the size of the screen. It will be interesting to see how well received the new Acer device is after it was announced at the Global press event that was recently held in New York City.

The phone boasted an unknown version of Android, and a quick demo of the phone was given to the eager crowd. The phone will also feature a two megapixel front facing camera that will likely work in a way that is similar to the iPhone 4, and allow users to video chat with their friends that they are speaking with on the phone, as well as an eight megapixel camera at the back of the phone that is capable of recording up to 720p video and also boasts an LED flash.

Acer did not give any clues as to what one can expect to pay for the phone, but did say that they expect the phone to first ship in the early weeks of the second quarter of 2011. An estimate of April was given to the crowd.

The phone also has a full metal body that will help to keep it from breaking, and will support Bluetooth 3.0. The Acer device will also have a 1GHz snapdragon processor along with an HDMI output, which will enable to watch whatever is playing on your phone on your HD television.

It certainly is an interesting announcement. The phone looks very similar in shape to an iPhone 4 unlocked but the metal case and huge screen definitely separate the phone from the pack. Acer has marketed the device as “100 percent smart phone and 100 percent tablet,” which is precisely what they have done with this device.

  • Many new smart devices are finding that when they partner with Facebook and provide features that other phones do not for the social networking platform, their chances of success rise quite significantly. Now, the Skyfire 3.0  app for Android is going to be adding a number of Facebook features to their browser that will increase compatibility with the device.

Skyfire is known for being the web browser that allows unlocked iPhone 4 users to play flash content online even though Apple has not officially supported flash because they claim that it will make their phones vulnerable to attacks. Skyfire works by converting the flash videos into other types of videos that are more suitable for a plethora of different devices, and the fact that they are adding Facebook integration will only help the browser to grow.

In the same way that Digg and other social bookmarking sites work, Skyfire will allow users to check out the most popular content that has been bookmarked to Facebook through their browser. They have also added the “Fireplace” which gives you all of the news feeds and links, videos, and images that your friends have posted. You also can access a number of different Facebook pages, including your profile with a single click of a button.

This is good news for Skyfire users who have been hearing rumors regarding Facebook support for weeks now. With nearly the entire world on the social networking service it is smart to add integration on devices, apps, websites and everything in between. This is a move that will not only benefit thegrowth of the app, but the users who use it as well. It will be interesting to see how well the new features are received by their current users because it will take away from the browser screen and will add a number of different buttons to the browser itself, drastically changing the interface.

  • HP’s webOS 2.0 will be making its way to tablets and larger phones, according to an announcement that was made by the company today. On the same day that the company announced that they had recorded large increases in revenue and profit throughout the last quarter, the announcement came that they were looking to further expand their webOS 2.0 operating system to encompass many more devices. With the Apple’s unlocked iphone 4 handset have a large market, it will be interesting to see which devices are targeted by the company with their new operating system.

Scott Miles from HP demoed the OS earlier in the week, showing off an email application and the Chrome browser (the same chrome browser that runs on desktop machines) smoothly running on webOS 2.0.

Perhaps the most interesting piece of the announcement was that apps for the IOS will scale to a number of different aspect ratios, allowing the apps to keep the same appearance and functionality form one device to another, whether it be a point and click device or a touchscreen device.

Enyo is a project that the company has put a lot of stock into. Their ability to cater to what mobile users are looking for has made the new operating system highly anticipated, and the announcement that the OS will support larger devices and smaller devices utilizing the same software makes it a viable option for many different devices.

Enyo will reportedly be available i the first quarter of 2011, and is expected to become a mainstay for years to come. The company also released a video that demoed some of the features from the software that was shown at the NYC technology convention earlier in the day. It will be interesting to see if the software garners enough attention from device manufacturers to compete with some of the larger operating system.

  • The long awaited Apple iOS 4.2.1 update is now available for download on all compatible devices. The company announced this morning that the update would be going live today after weeks of speculation about when the update would be made available through iTunes. There really is no reason not to upgrade, as this update will fix a number of features that experienced problems with the iOS 4.2 update on some devices. A number of changes were made with the new update, including a tweak to the Facetime voice control, among others.

The video calling technology will also now support a number of different Bluetooth accessories which will make video conferencing on the unlocked iPhone 4 much easier in the future.

The iPod Touch (fourth generation) also received a number of bug fixes in the new updates, including bugs that dealt with the stereo playback through a car when the phone was connected through a USB port.

You might want to wait a few hours to download the update as the servers seem to be a little bit bogged down at the moment with everyone rushing to install the update. If you wait until you go to sleep, and let the update happen overnight, you should wake up with a freshly updated mobile device in the morning. Keep in mind, you will have to go through a number of confirmation screens after the update has been downloaded so set your alarm a little bit early to make up for it.

The iOS 4.2.1 update will not add any high profile new features to devices and instead will mostly fix bugs and update the features that have been present in the previous versions of the devices. There is no rush to update as no security bugs have been associated with the previous version, but it is a good idea to update as soon as possible.

  • Apple may have paved the way with the release of the iPad, but now Samsung is getting into the tablet device game with the release of their Unlocked Galaxy Tabs, which have garnered a lot of attention from tech blogs and other media today. The company confirmed today that their device has been able to sell more than 600,000 copies across the world.

Powered by Android, The Galaxy Tab is the first successful tablet device that utilizes the Android technology and has access to the Android app store. It is the most popular Android tablet in the world following this announcement, and the tablet is only expected to grow in popularity in the coming weeks and months.

Samsung is undoubtedly pleased with the sales figures of the device throughout the first month. Although they came no where close to matching the figures that Apple was able to post with the iPad, it shows that there is an international market for other companies to produce tablet computers, even if they are likely unable to compete with Apple in the US market. In Korea, the home market for the company, they were able to sell more than 30,000 devices during the first week of its availability in the country.

Apple is also launching their iPad device in Korea. So far, residents of the nation have been able to preorder the device for a week and Apple has already recorded more than 40,000 preorders, and it looks as though Apple will be able to outsell Samsung in their home market, a market that Samsung hoped that they could capture with an early release of their own tablet device. It will be interesting to see how quickly Samuang tries to spread the device to other markets and locations, and in which countries they are able to compete with Apple.

  • FaceTime On The iPhone 4
Posted on November 18, 2010 by Pure Mobile

The iPhone 4 comes equipped with FaceTime, something that has evolved the way we think about talking over the phone. Since the beginning of sci-fi there was always a way to talk with somebody over great distances but still be able to see them, however it has take some time for that to become a portable reality. With the unlocked iPhone 4 however this is no longer sci-fi, thanks to the high quality VGA front facing camera you can video talk with whoever you want (as long as they have a iPhone 4). Simply touch a button and you can start talking with somebody face to face.

As you can imagine this makes the phone incredibly useful and flexible. Maybe you have to work during an important event, there is no reason why you have to miss it if somebody has an iPhone 4 who you know. Everything you thought about cell phones is changing thanks to the iPhone 4.

Both Back And Front Facing Cameras

The iPhone 4 is much sought after thanks to the front facing camera it has. This was a necessity if you wanted to voice chat with somebody, however the high definition camera found on the back comes as a nice added bonus. You can take pictures and record in HD, memorable moments and gorgeous views can be saved for ever in their vibrant colors. You can get the best seat at numerous events even if you weren't actually there. You can share in the celebration of your child's birthday even if you had to be out of town, or share in a bed time story with your youngest as you sit in a hotel room on a business trip, there is just so much you can do with these two great cameras.

Using FaceTime is incredibly easy, simply make a call like normal and then select the button that says.. you guessed it, 'FaceTime', you can then add anybody you want to the video conversation. On their end they are asked if they want to accept the invitation, when they choose yes there is a very short loading screen before the video talk starts. Although you can have video conversations with other phones, none of them do it in such a quick, simple and intuitive manner.

The iPhone 4 unlocked handset was already popular before it even hit the stores, however with FaceTime it became an even bigger hit. Since the first sci-fi that had a video conversation people have been waiting until the time they could do it themselves in a simple way, the iPhone 4 has realized that dream.
