Moshi for iPad
  • The allure of the imposing Apple iPhone is very strong. It's built like a sports car and performs like one too. Everything is streamlined, cohesive, and works together to give you a smartphone experience that is very simple and pleasing. The very nature of Apple being the ultimate pick up and play device is at work. I feel like I could hand an iPhone to a toddler and within minutes they would have it figured out. Well this is all fine and dandy, I, being a now-former iPhone user, eventually grew tired of the straight and narrow path presented by Apple. It was time for me to expand my horizons. It has been almost two months now since I got my Nexus 5. While there are some things I do miss, there is a lot to love about Android. Here are five reasons I now prefer Android to IOS.

My red Nexus 5, my first Android phone

    1. Choice

iTunes is a standard in music. But what if you don't like iTunes, or think it could be improved? Tough luck. With Android you have a choice. If you aren't happy with the standard music player you can go out and find one you do like. Heck you can even make one if you feel compelled!

    2. Phones, Phones, and more Phones

I never realized how small an iPhone was until I picked up my Nexus 5. The full HD 5 inch screen makes watching movies and videos far more feasible. It has also opened my eyes to gaming as my big hands often cluttered the screen of my iPhone. All of this is made possible by the fact I had a choice with Android. I probably could have found a smaller screen phone, or heck even a larger one, but with iPhone you have one choice, iPhone.

    3. Better Choice In Accessories

How many times have you dug around for an iPhone cord to realize you didn't have the right one or it was magically incompatible for some reason? I said too many times. With Android it is simple. Is it Micro USB? Well, it'll work. This means I can use a huge variety of chargers for both the home and car. Same goes for cases and wireless chargers. We didn't see the first great flip cover for the iPhone until this year. Samsung, LG, and others have been making unique covers and cases for years. Compatibility and choice, I'll take that.

    4. Price

This is self-explanatory. I got my Nexus 5 shipped to my house off-contract for less than $450. I know, $450 aint cheap. But do you want an Apple iPhone 5S off-contract? You are looking at $649. Add in Apple Care and you are close to $800. Yikes.

    5. Apple IS Just one company

While they are a visionary company, Apple is still just one company. When you have the minds of Samsung, Sony, LG, and Google pounding out phones for Android you see more innovation because you have more minds working on making phones as good as they can be. When that happens, when competition happens, consumers win.

  • Apple today announced the latest addition to the iPad line, unveiling the new Apple iPad Air and the the Apple iPad Mini with Retina Display. Both feature some of the new advancements we saw with the latest generation of iPhones and the all-new IOS 7. One thing is certain though, these new iPads are thinner, faster, and lighter than their previous editions and represent a huge jump for their respective lines.

    The iPad Air

The iPad Air features a 9.7 inch Retina Display screen, making this display just as nice on the eyes as the previous generations equipped with the ground-breaking display. This screen is centred into a 9.4 inch body that is just .29 inches deep. The total weight? Just one pound.

Inside the new iPad Air is the A7 chipset found within the iPhone 5S. This 64-bit chip is based on desktop technology, bringing the tablet even closer to replacing your traditional laptop or desktop. In addition to the A7, the iPad Air also features the M7 Motion Chip, introducing a world of possibilities app-wise. Other hardware improvements include MIMO, which improves wifi speeds, and an impressive ten hour battery life.

In addition to these new features, there is a bevy of new features being introduced on the software side, including improvements to the iLife and iWork suites that take advantage of the A7 chipset and its desktop and laptop friendly architecture.

The new iPad Air Launches on November 1st.

The iPad Mini with Retina Display

The very popular iPad Mini line also received an update. This came in the form of the addition of Apple's legendary Retina Display. This increases the iPad Mini's screen resolution exponentially, and also puts it in line with the iPad Air, meaning developers will have an easier time developing apps for both devices.

This 7.9 inch tablet will be available later in November and promises to be a hot item from Apple.

  • Apple will be holding an event on October 22nd, but just what they are announcing is something of a mystery. The obvious contender is the iPad. Both the iPad and the iPad Mini are due for upgrades and if you follow the bread crumbs, it should be clear what kind of upgrades we are looking at.

    A7 Processors

At last month's iPhone 5S and 5C event, Apple showed off their all new 64-bit A7 Processors. It is highly likely that any new iPad or iPad Mini will feature this new processor as Apple strives to set the 64-bit processor as the new standard in smartphone and tablet tech. The A7 chip basically doubled the speed of the Apple iPhone 5S over the older iPhone 5 and that kind of jump in speed should be expected for the new iPads as well.

    Retina Display

While the latest iPad already features the Retina Display, the iPad Mini is still stuck in the stone-age of screen technology. It should come as no surprise that Apple will find a way to cram Retina Display tech into a smaller body. This will be a huge step for the iPad Mini line and will further establish the Mini as a bonafide tablet, and not just a shrunken iPad.

    Other Possible Announcements

It is a foregone conclusion that any upcoming Apple event will also spotlight the release of Apple's OS X Mavericks Operating System for laptop and desktop computers. Developers already have their hands on what Apple calls the "Golden Master" version of the OS, meaning that it's ready to go.

Additionally, It is expected that Apple will be refreshing the MacBook Pro, souping up their Pro line with the MacBook Air's Haswell Processors. These processors are incredibly efficient, and stretched the MacBook Air's battery life beyond 12 hours. This will give the heavyweight lifting Pro the endurance of the marathon running Air, really pushing the MacBook Pro to new limits.

  • Apple Announces New iPhone 5S
Posted on September 13, 2013 by keith holland

Apple has announced the successor to the Apple iPhone 5, the Apple iPhone 5S. The phone was revealed, along with its tech brother the iPhone 5C, at a press event in Cupertino, California on September 10th. Lets take a look at what sets this phone apart from the iPhone 5 and what new features Apple has introduced with this iteration of its massively popular iPhone line.

The first, and biggest, innovation worth discussing is the introduction of the fingerprint reader embedded in the home button of the new iPhone. In addition to serving as a means to lock and unlock your device, this fingerprint reader introduces a bevy of new features such as the ability to pay for songs, movies, and apps through either Apple's App Store or iTunes using just your fingerprint. Well this is cool, when developers get their hands on this tech there is sure to be an influx of ideas on how to further optimize this potentially revolutionary tech.

In addition to that small piece of news, the iPhone 5S will be arriving in an all-new colour. Apple calls it Champagne, but lets be real, this is a gold iPhone. I was originally skeptical, but I have since warmed up to the idea of a golden iPhone. It could have turned out very cheesy, but thankfully this golden iPhone is gorgeous.

In addition to the outside, the inside of the iPhone 5S got a serious makeover. The new iPhone 5S ships with an all new 64-bit, A7 processor. This tech doesn't just improve over the iPhone, it doubles its processing power and introduces the world to console level graphics on a handheld device. In fact, the new processor makes the iPhone 5S 56 times as powerful as the original iPhone.

While there will always be skeptics, I think the Apple iPhone 5S has delivered on all counts and will be a rousing success for Apple. The upgrades as excellent, the potential for the fingerprint scanner is pretty much limitless, and the new colour is a thing to behold. Check out the new iPhone when it hits stores September 20th.

  • The case is building towards Apple announcing at least one new phone at their press event on September 10th. While it is a near certainty that one of those products will be heavily rumoured and leak riddled iPhone 5C, the true successor to the iPhone 5 is still somewhat shrouded in mystery. Is it the iPhone 6? Is it the iPhone 5S? Nobody is 100% sure. What we do THINK we know is that it MIGHT come with something new to mobile phones and is sure to really change how we secure our phones.

Leaked photos showing a new design for the home button, and the ever-present rumour of a fingerprint sensor seem to indicate that the new iPhone will include a fingerprint scanner as its key feature. The leaked photos show that there is definitely something new under the hood of the new iPhone and while hardware comes and goes, the iPhone doesn't change much physically as the versions come and go. It's certainly worth noticing as Apple's press event approaches next month.

Additionally, another new rumour has popped up recently, and it's got a golden ring to it. According to, get this, more leaked photos, the new iPhone 5S/6, may ship in two colours. The one you are used to and has become a staple of Apple products, and a new gold backed device. It certainly is an interesting design choice if true but I wouldn't put too much stock in it.

    Whaaaaaaaat?

Regardless of what comes next month, the world will certainly be watching as the world's most important electronics company gets set to unveil its newest phones. The world of mobile phones has changed quite a bit since the iPhone 5 launched last year. It will be interesting to see what comes next and how the world reacts to one of the world's biggest trend setters unleashing their next big thing.

  • Apple's big day is coming very soon. September 10th is just around the corner and the speculation is that Apple will be unveiling at least one new model of the iPhone. On top of the reported Apple iPhone 5S announcement, there is rampant speculation that we will see a low-cost iPhone hit the market as well. The iPhone 5C has been highly speculated, almost moreso than the 5S, and some features are beginning to leak out. But, we are now beginning to hear what you expect to hear when you hear the word budget. We are beginning to hear about the features that won't come with the 5C.

In addition to being generally a less powerful phone, it is now being reported that the Apple iPhone 5C will ship without our favourite personal assistant Siri. The highly popular and increasingly useful Siri apparently won't make the trip into the architecture of the Apple iPhone 5C. While changes are expected to be minimal with the iPhone 5S outside of a possible fingerprint reader, it is expected that the 5C will be built cheaper not just inside, but outside as well. The plastic bodied phone is expected to situate itself above the iPhone 4S in the Apple hierarchy, replacing the very popular 4S as the second option for people looking to pick up an Apple smartphone. This is quite surprising considering that the iPhone 4 is still a very popular entry level smartphone that continues to sell in droves among younger audiences.

While it is always sad to see the retirement of a very popular phone like the Apple iPhone 4S, it was bound to happen. It is just sad to see it replaced by a phone that will admittedly be weaker and less supported by popular Apple software. Here's hoping that Apple doesn't take the wind out of the Apple iPhone 5C's sails before it hits the open sea.

  • In August of 2013, we are on the verge of the next big unveil by Apple. Maybe it's the 5C, or iPhone 6, maybe the 5S. No one is 100% sure. Needless to say whichever phone does come next, it'll borrow from the iPhone 4S, which borrowed from the 4 and so on. But where did the original iPhone come from? Well that my friends can be partly answered with the Apple Newton.

In 1991, the Newton was pitched to John Sculley, then the CEO of Apple. It was envisioned as a new class of hand-held computing. A device that could take notes, store contacts, manage calendars, send faxes, and even transpose your hand writing, done with a stylus, into a digital format. It featured what designers called the "batman design". It was dark, sleek, and most importantly fit in your pocket. 20 years ago this week, the device hit store shelves. That's where the apple fell too hard on this Newton.

The device, which released in 1993, was barely working when it was sent to production. Features like the handwriting recognition were ridiculed in the media. A comic, published nationally, famously ran a series on mis-identified words with the Newton. It was most famously known for mistaking "Catching on?" with "egg freckles", sparking hilarity and even leading to an Easter Egg in future software designs of the device.

But, as much as the public laughed at the device, there was one person who hated the Newton more than anyone else. Steve Jobs. When Jobs was able to regain control of the company he took massive pleasure in canning it. His biggest complaint? The stylus. He was quoted as saying "God gave us ten stylus'" when asked to reflect on the failure that was the Newton and its hobbled input mechanism.

Now, what does this have to do with the iPhone? Well, the obvious connection is that both devices are mobile computing platforms designed by Apple. Through trial and error (the Newton) Apple was able to learn how to get it right and drop the stylus. But, on a deeper level the development of the Newton kickstarted the development of the ARM Processor, a piece of technology that may have fallen by the wayside if not picked up by Apple to build their mobile computers.

It may not have been pretty, and it may have been stubborn, but the Newton certainly paved the way for the mobile computing advances we enjoy today. It seems the Apple didn't fall too far from the tree when it came to the iPhone.
