  • It's finally here.  Sony Ericsson has finally released the Xperia X1.  Now it's time to see if the phone can live up to the hype.

The Xperia X1 is definitely a full featured phone.  It's a quad band phone that works on the 3G network.   It also includes Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP and miniUSB connection.  On top of all this it has GPS, FM Radio and a whole host of music functions.  It's definitely not lacking anything you could want.

As for how it works we must say the system is well designed.  It is fast and responsive.  Windows Mobile works well on the phone and doesn't have any major flaws.  The full QWERTY keyboard that slides out is a nice feature and a good choice rather then trying to copy an iPhone with a full touch screen.

The one real downside is the price point.  The expected price is going to be around $1000 which is high compared to some of phones that are in the same category of full featured phones.  Althrough it's high priced, depending on the user it may be well worth it.  It can definitely be used as a replacement to the laptop especially if you travel a lot and don't want to bulky laptop with you everywhere you go.

Overall the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 is definitely worth a look at.  The long wait has been worth it and if you've been salavating over it this long the stop waiting and get to www.puremobile.com and buy it already.

Posted on October 29, 2008 by Pure Mobile

Cell phones have become an important part of our life and along with being used for communication; these devices have also become a style statement. With almost every person having a cell phone, it is very common to come across someone with the same cell phone as yours. Now you can personalize your phone by using various accessories to make it look different from the cell phones of other people. Here are five ways in which you can personalize your phone:

    • Ring Tones: Every time you get a call, you can know it by the ring tone of your phone. Almost all new mobile phones have the options to change the ring tones. You can set your favorite song, a recorded voice or your self composed tune as the ring tone of your phone. There are several website where you can download new ring tones for your mobile phone for free or at a small price.
    • Wallpapers: Wallpaper gives a distinct look to the screen of your cell phone. You can use images clicked from your camera phone as the wallpaper. Wallpapers can also be downloaded from the internet. You can simply choose wallpaper to suit the size of your phone screen and change it with the existing wallpaper.
    • Phone Skins: Phone skins are an innovative way to change the way your phone looks. These skins not only protect your phone from any damage if it falls from your hand but also make it look unique.
    • Themes: Themes are a complete package that can change the whole look of your phone. By choosing a new theme for your phone you can change the screen colors, icons shapes, ring tone, and wallpaper of your phone. Many phone models are available with their own theme creator and you can create themes which you like with this software.

  • Google Phone
Posted on October 27, 2008 by Pure Mobile

So this week brings a new phone at PureMobile for us to test out and give our opinion on what we think.  The phone we get to test is Google’s G1 Android Phone.  It’s been a long time coming and the wait has been worth it.

The phone is sleek and slim weighing in at around 5.6 ounces and measuring approximately 4.6 x 2.1 x 0.6 inches.  The good thing about this small package is that it packs a 3.2 inch touch screen and full QWERTY keyboard that slides out for easier typing.  The screen is bright and easy to see which is definitely a good thing.  The G1 also supports the 3G network for high speed downloads on your phone and can be connected to a local Wi-Fi network also.

Coming with a 3MP camera the photos look nice but we were disappointed with the lack of options they gave us.  We couldn’t figure out how to lower the quality of the images or resolution so we could save on space.  The phone comes with 60MB of internal memory and a microSD slot to put a card into.  We had no problem using a 16GB card microSD memory card for storage space.

You also get all the standard things like the ability to use Gmail, Yahoo Messenger and MSN Messenger, which means that we at PureMobile will be able to continue our excellent customer service.

As for a few downsides we have to say the lack of A2DP or Stereo Bluetooth and a standard 3.5mm head phone jack (why a USB jack?) makes us think that even though the phone has a lot of potential the music capabilities could definitely use some improvements.

Now for the App Market, which is Google’s store to get new applications to increase the usefulness of your phone, is a good thing.  At the time of writing there are plenty of apps available and more being added all the time.  It leaves a lot of growth for your new phone.  You can download new apps and games all the time.

From our in-house tests the edge network is faster then it is on the iPhone.

So overall we are impressed.  It’s a good phone and, being an open platform it looks like, it will only get better.  We would definitely recommend it and can’t wait for the next version of the phone to see what upgrades are included

  • GSM Defined
Posted on October 21, 2008 by Pure Mobile

One thing that we most often get questions on at PureMobile is regarding the GSM network and what it is.  The reason is there are two networks CDMA and GSM.  The main difference to find out which you have is locate the sim card, a small chip in the phone that contains all your information.  If you have this card then you likely have GSM.  Now we say likely as some carrier’s like Sprint have a walkie-talkie type network (NexTel) and they use a “sim card” but it’s for Sprint’s CDMA network.

GSM phones can be unlocked because the sim card can be removed and placed into another phone without having to call the carrier to activate it.  CDMA needs to have each phone activated by the carrier on the network to operate.  This limits the phones you can use.

Another difference is that GSM phones are much more widely available.  GSM networks are found throughout the world.  They each use different bands but they are all GSM.  CDMA can be found primarily in North America and a few other countries.

As we just mentioned GSM use bands or frequencies.  There are four frequencies that are used most frequently.  They are the 850 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz and the 1900 MHz bands.  In North America the two widely available are the 850 MHz and the 1900 MHz.

So the question is which type of phone should you choose?  Well it depends on where you plan on using the phone.  If you are going to use it in North America then you can simply get any phone that uses the 850 MHz and 1900 MHz bands and you should have no problems.  If you plan to travel then you would be best to get a quad band phone, which is a phone that can work on all four of the bands.  This gives you the least chance of running into a problem with no signal.

More and more phones these days are coming as quad band phones so you don’t have to limit yourself.  You can get one phone and use it the world over.

  • Obama and his Cell Phone.
Posted on October 16, 2008 by Pure Mobile

As we get closer and are now less then 3 weeks away it is getting down to that time.  America votes on November 4, 2008 and like last week we still have that burning question which cell phones do our leaders use?

Last week we asked the question about John McCain.  This week we are wondering about Barack Obama himself.  We presume that Barack Obama is more technology friendly then John McCain.  Mr. Obama never stated that he doesn’t know how to use a computer or email.  Also Obama is 25 years younger then McCain at 47 years old.

Now the question is what kind of cell phone does he use?  Is he a smart phone type or a simple make a call type like with a Razr?  Obama looks like a simple man.  He looks like a man that doesn’t get too tied down by technology, even though he is a big advocate for technology.

For the answer to this question check back next Tuesday for the answer and for a new entry into our blog and until then why not check out our Bluetooth headsets for a safer driving experience

  • Politicians and their Cell Phones
Posted on October 14, 2008 by Pure Mobile

With the impending US elections upon us once again it seems everyone is writing about what John McCain and Barack Obama are doing on the campaign trail.  You hear all sorts of stories about the main issues.  Well as a website devoted to everything cell phone we feel that our readers want to know what their leaders are using on the campaign trail.  Do the leaders even use cell phones?  If so which one?  Who’s their provider?  At The Insider we want to answer these questions and more.
The big news recently, at least cell phone related, on the campaign trail recently was John McCain’s, well his aides claim actually, that he helped invent the Blackberry. The actual words were said by Douglas Holtz-Eakin, a top McCain policy adviser, waving his BlackBerry around and talking about McCain's work as a senator, telling reporters September 16, 2008, "You're looking at the miracle that John McCain helped create."
Now although everyone knows he didn’t help create the Blackberry John McCain has been seen using both a Blackberry and a standard cell phone on the campaign trail.  What we want to know is what Blackberry does Mr. McCain use?  Is it a Bold? Is it a Curve? What about the lovely Pearl?  Before we reveal the answer we want to hear from you our readers.

Which Blackberry do you think John McCain uses?  We will reveal the answer on Thursday October 16, 2008.  In the meantime if you need some help check out our Blackberry page for the list of Blackberry phones.  You can find the page here
