The Google Android platform is one that has been constantly gaining popularity since it was first released. They have been able to put together a very excellent smart device operating system that has been able to be picked up by a number of manufacturers to allow them to place on their phones such as unlocked Samsung Galaxy S II, Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc. They were able to increase their total market share by 1% last quarter to grab a total of 40% of the US market device market. The Apple IOS stayed flat at a total of 28% of the overall market and research in motion Blackberry operating system continue to lose 1.2 fault to a total of just 19%.
The Windows operating systems, Windows mobile, along with the newer Windows phone operating system were able to take up a total of 8% of the market. Many of those who utilize Windows operating systems for their phone are still using the older operating system that was carried with many smart devices when it was first released. Microsoft and rethought their strategy as they saw their market share slip in and was able to release the Windows Phone 7 operating system which has been ahead for the company, but is the start of a very slow climb upwards and market share.
It is not currently clear if Android will be able to reach the 50% market anytime in the near future, but they seem to be slowly but surely climbing in overall market share for smart devices throughout the US. Reaching the 40% mark shows that there are going to be able to continue to climb, and they have already made themselves the largest operating system for smart devices on the market well ahead of competing Apple and Research in Motion operating systems. The trend will continue with Window Phone 7 perhaps making a small dent.
