Moshi for iPad
  • It is official; the two remaining major players in the Canadian mobile phone industry will carry the iPhone. In two separate news releases, Bell Canada and Telus announced the launch of their new 3G network and partnerships with Apple that will allow them to carry the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS. There is no official date set for the release but both corporate websites suggest it will be available in November.

With major mobile companies in Canada upgrading their network to support 3G, isn’t it time for Sprint and Verizon to do the same? We’re not sure but one thing is certain, they are missing a great opportunity with growing popularity of the iPhone. The fight should be over at this point and clearly 3G networks have won, it’s time to do right and get on the 3G bandwagon. The result for end users is more variety which in turn results in lower costs, more features and overall better innovation in Smartphones. Don’t hold your breathe but let’s see if Sprint and Verizon follow the lead of their northern counterparts.

  • Blackberry Bold 9700
Posted on September 23, 2009 by Pure Mobile

So a first hand review of the Blackberry Bold 9700 has been posted by BoyGeniusReport.com and  it seems to be two thumbs up.  From what the review says this is going to be the best Blackberry phone to date.

It's smaller then the Tour 9630 but bigger then the Curve 8900.  The Bold 9700 also does away with the trackball in favor of the trackpad that is found on the Curve 8520.  The testers seemed to love it.

The screen is apparently a great screen.  Actually they said the best one yet of any Blackberry.  It's was clear and crisp and images seemed to float on the screen.

Best of all the battery seems to have the longest life of any 3G phone currently on the market.

I guess only time will tell what the phone is really like until it is finally released.  Expect to see it on PureMobile as soon as it is.

  • Sony Ericsson Xperia X3
Posted on September 18, 2009 by Pure Mobile

With the Xperia X1 still fresh in people's minds and the Xperia X2 not even on the market yet it looks like the Sony Ericsson Xperia X3 might be released in January 2010.  The Xperia X3 looks like it will be the first Android from Sony Ericsson.

We actually saw our first glimpse of the Xperia X3 a few months ago when images of the Sony Ericsson Rachel hit the web.  It is rumored to have an 8 mega-pixel camera built in, WiFi, GPS, microSD expansion, email support for POP3 and even Microsoft Exchange.

I guess for now we will just have to wait see when Sony Ericsson makes the official announcement on the Xperia X3.

  • Travelling And Your Cell Phone
Posted on September 11, 2009 by Pure Mobile

We recently came across this article on CNN that talked about high roaming charges and we thought it would be a good idea to bring it up on the blog.

The article talks about P. Morgan Brown and "when his wife decided to take a spur-of-the-moment vacation to Indonesia."  When she got back from the trip her "Verizon bill came to a staggering $8,000. Text-messages home cost an astounding $2.50 each and the meter was running at an eye-popping $1.75 a minute for phone calls."

Now Mrs. Brown's case is an exception but it's happening more and more.  People aren't realizing the charges and the roaming rates they are being charged.

This problem isn't happening just with overseas travel.  Steven Frischling, a New York travel consultant, returned from a recent trip to Detroit to find a $500 international phone bill.  The problem wiht his bill was he was in Detroit which meant it wasn't actually roaming.  The problem was the Apple iPhone he used kept picking up signal from the Canadian towers.  He was able to prove that he was in Detroit and the charges were eventually reveresed.

The article gives 5 things you can do to alleviate those high charges

    1. Buy another phone.  That's right when you get over to the place you are going by a local service with pre-paid SIM card.  Likely this will be a cheaper alternative then the roaming charges.  We are sure that a local cell phone place would have been better then an $8000 bill.

    2. Get a plan.  If you want to keep you phone and still use your carriers service then consider getting a international plan.  One where roaming is included.

    3. Go VOIP.  VOIP or Voice Over Internet Protocol is a feature that lets you make a call over the internet rather then over the cell phone towers.  You may have heard of Skype.  This is a VOIP service and if you are make Skype to Skype calls then calling is free anywhere in the world.  You can be in the US and calling someone in China and you wouldn't pay a dime.

    4. Swap Cards.  Probably the most convenient way.  If you have a GSM cell phone you can get it unlocked or you can buy an unlocked cell phone.  By doing this it lets you use the same phone you are use to but simply remove the SIM card in the phone and replace it with one locally.  Basically this gives you the option of getting a local plan but not having to buy a phone.  This is good since you can generally pick up a SIM card in most convenience stores.  You basically are turning your cell phone into a pre-paid service.  When you get back state-side simply put your regular SIM card back in and you'll have your old service without the charges.

    5. Leave your phone at home.  If you really want to be sure then simply don't bring your phone.  If it's not out of the country then it can't get high roaming charges.

  • Four New Phones Coming Soon
Posted on September 3, 2009 by Pure Mobile

This week 4 new phones have been announced by Nokia and Sony Ericsson.  Nokia has announced the Nokia X3, Nokia X6 and the Nokia N97 Mini.  Sony Ericsson on the other hand has announced the Sony Ericsson Xperia X2.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 is going to be released similar to the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1.  The Xperia X2 is going to come in a X2 and X2a version.  Basically one (X2a) will have 3G for North America and the other (X2) will have European 3G.  The Xperia X2 is going to have Windows Mobile Professional 6.5, Wifi, Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP, and even an 8MP camera built in.  All in all the Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 does seem like a nice upgrade from the popular Xperia X1

Nokia's first phone is a follow up the the Nokia N97.  The new phone is the Nokia N97 Mini.  It is a strange release because the N97 Mini is pretty much the same as the N97.  If you are wondering the difference one website saide the Nokia N97 Mini is the N97 at 90% the size.  Basically it's not really that mini.  It still has the 8GB of internal memory, the 5MP camera and the FM transmitter.  If you found the N97 to be a little bulky then you should definitely give the Nokia N97 Mini smartphone a look

The second phone is the Nokia X3.  This is rumored to be a lower budget phone.  The rumor is that the Nokia X3 will cost around $150USD, but that has yet to be determined.  The X3 looks to be a really nice phone.  It's going to be a slider without 3G capabilities.  It will have a 3.2MP camera, Bluetooth v2.1 with A2DP, and will support up to a 16GB MicroSD card.

    Nokia X3 Nokia X3

The last phone that Nokia accounced was the Nokia X6.  This new phone will be a touch screen phone.  It will have 32GB of internal storage, a 5MP camera, European 3G and up to 8h 30mins talk time.  The Nokia X6 looks to be a really nice touch screen phone.

    Nokia X6 Nokia X6

All these phones are expected to be out for Q4 2009.  If they will be pushed back we can't say but for now we are eagerly awaiting all the new phones.

  • Do You Drive and Text?
Posted on September 2, 2009 by Pure Mobile

We came across an interesting article on the Consumerist about a poll done to see if a laws should be inacted to stop people from using cell phones while driving.

What was interesting was that 80% of respondants said they would support banning texting and emailing while driving.  Even 67% would support banning cell phone calls during driving.

Of all the things learned about in the survey it seems more people feel that more people talk and drive now then they did a year ago.

Many states are coming with laws and we are going to see more in the future.  If you want to see the full Nationwide poll you can read it here.  Otherwise we'd recommend getting a Bluetooth headset or Bluetooth car kit to at least help you put some focus back on the road

  • There's an iPhone app out there for everything--finding a restaurant, amusing yourself on a long bus ride, pretending you're a Jedi complete with lightsaber. But few of us ever think that one app could mean the difference between life and death. Here's a list of apps that will take you from accident waiting to happen to survivor extraordinaire. So pick up an iPhone 3GS and prepare to be saved.

    Here it goes:

    1. Emergency Preparedness ChecklistEmergency - Checklist

As the saying goes, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” The Emergency Preparedness Checklist is a 59-point checklist that helps you prepare for any kind of emergency. Get advice on how to create an emergency plan, what disaster supplies you can’t do without and important steps you need to take in the event of an evacuation.

    2. iSurvive Wilderness Support

    Emergency - Wilderness
You’re lost in the woods and don’t know what to do. Don’t panic. iSurvive contains all of the information essential to your survival. In easy to understand language and detailed diagrams, this app will tell you how to tie knots, construct a shelter, set a snare and so much more.

    3. Emergency Radio

    Emergency - Radio
No one can predict when disaster will strike, but you can give yourself a head start if it does. Emergency radio lets you locate nearby frequencies, listen to police chatter and keeps you abreast of what’s really going on in case of calamity.

    4. Pocket First Aid & CPR Guide

    Emergency - CPR
Heart attack? Choking? No problem. Pocket First Aid & CPR Guide is an extensive and easy to follow guide to life saving procedures. It has videos to teach you how to provide first aid, creates detailed medical profiles and contains up-to-date information from the American Heart Association.

    5. iSOS – GPS emergency locator

    Emergency - SOS(2)

You’ve just gotten into a car accident and you or someone else is seriously injured. What do you do? Use iSOS. This application reports your position to the police, medical services, family or friends and whoever else you program it to contact. After activation an e-mail is automatically sent with data you’ve included—name, age, document number, mobile number—as well as a link to Google Maps with your GPS position.

    6. Airstrip OB

    Emergency - Dr

Airstrip is designed for doctors not patients, but it could still save your life one day. Developed specifically for Obstetricians and those involved with childbirth. It allows your doctor to track your vitals on the go and can send notices in the event of an emergency like cardiac arrest.

    7. Diabetes Log

    Emergency - Dibetes(2)

This application allows you to track glucose readings, food intake and medicine records; a must for any diabetic. Diabetes log lets you export records over CVS or e-mail and select the span of the records you want to view. The creators hope to soon include a function that lets you edit medication types and record classifications.

    8. Pillbox

    Emergency - Pillbox(2)

This app was created by the Community Health Network and allows you to keep track of your and your family’s medication list. It links all of your listed medications to an information database, lets you keep separate lists for each family member and stores a list of physicians associated with each profile.

    9. PEPID

    Emergency - Toxic

This application is a comprehensive and free toxicology resource. It allows you to spot poisonous plants, track dangerous drug interactions and includes a guide on how to identify and manage any toxicology emergency; everything from inhaled gases and occupational poisonings to drug abuses and medication overdoses. It’s great for the expert and layperson.

    10. Smart-ICE

    Emergency - ICE

Designed by an EMS Director with over 30 years experience in emergency response, this program contains everything first responders and emergency room staff need to know to treat you effectively should you become incapacitated. A database of Allergies, medical history, emergency contacts and your express wishes will be at the fingertips of those people trying to save your life.

    11. Escape Call

    Emergency - Escape

Okay, so maybe a bad date or a lame party isn’t exactly a life or death situation, but Escape Call can definitely stop you from wishing you were dead. In the past you had to rely on a trusted and loyal friend to call you mid-date to give you a polite excuse to flee the scene of the disaster. No more. Escape Call features ringing and call in progress screens that use names and photos from your phone’s address book. Because life is to short for stilted conversations.

So next time you're stuck in a life-threatening or just plain uncomfortable situation, whip out your iPhone and grab a hold of that app life line. And if you don't have an iPhone 3GS, maybe you can win one.

Posted on August 19, 2009 by Pure Mobile

So last week Robin Williams was on Conan O'Brian.  Conan started asking him about what he thought about technology and Robin Williams ran with it.

He talked about online gaming, facebook, twitter and myspace.  He even makes a mention about Blackberry's which he referred to as crackberry's.

This is a must watch for anyone.  Caution though it is on late night TV.
