  • So thanks to both and it looks like we have another new Blackberry coming sometime this year.  We've already heard about a Storm 2 coming out sometime this year and the Curve 8520, but not it looks like we have the Blackberry Onyx coming this year too.

The Blackberry Onyx is also being called the Driftwood and it is said to be part of the 96xx series of phones.  This means that it is going to be a 3G phone and from the looks of the pictures it looks more like a Curve then a Bold.

From what is being said by it looks like it will have some decent specs

    • AWS 1700MHz + 2100MHz UMTS/HSDPA
    • 3.2 megapixel autofocus camera
    • GPS
    • Wi-Fi
    • QWERTY keyboard
    • Optical trackpad
    • 480×360 screen
    • Carbon fiber-esque back battery cover (the whole back is a carbon fiber pattern apparently)

The Onyx seems to have the same specs to the Curve 8900 and it's going to have 3G for T-Mobile in the US and it does seem like it will ship with the optical track ball that was introduced to everyone last week on teh Curve 8520.

The real question now is does RIM have too many phones on the market.  Recently with the Bold 9000, Curve 8900, Pearl 8220 Flip, Curve 8520, Curve 83xx, Pearl 81xx,  and now the Onyx 96xx we are selling a lot of phones on the market.  Only time will tell how any of them will do but at present the Bold and Curve 8900 are some of the nicest ones RIM has produced to date.

  • So RIM has been on a real hot streak recently.  They have been releasing a lot of phones recently, with the Bold, Storm and Curve 8900 no one can say they haven't been able to get their fix and now it looks like they are releasing another Blackberry phone.

This one is set to be a "low-end" phone.  The new phone, Blackberry Curve 8520, looks to be released in the next few months as it is in testing phase now.  The new Curve will be an upgrade to the old 8300 line but won't be as full featured as the higher end Curve 8900.

There was a full review done over at Crackberry with a testing unit.  They down a full review and include that the specs for the phone are:

    • Edge device
    • 320 by 240 display
    • 256 megabytes of internal memory (same as 8900)
    • 1150mAh battery
    • 2 megapixel camera, no flash

Alright so there aren't many specs known at this point, but the phone is still in testing so more feature might become available later one.  Some interesting things mentioned in the article though about the Curve 8520 are

    • No flash for the camera
    • No charging pins
    • No standard trackball

The above features all seem like they will be missing from the Blackberry Curve 8520.  Most notably the trackball has been replaced by an optical trackball.  Basically they got rid of the ball and made it a sensor.  According to the article the implementation of it on the Curve 8520 seems to be pretty smooth.

Also another new feature is dedicated media buttons to play and pause your music on the phone.

The phone's casing is also "rubberized" which should make it a little more resistant to being dropped.

So the big question now are when will it be released?  The fact that it is now being tested does show that it shouldn't be too much longer.  Hopefully sooner then later we will be able to see this lower end Blackberry cell phone hit the market to give people another option.

  • New Palm Phone Soon To Be Released
Posted on April 30, 2009 by Pure Mobile

So it looks like this year is going to be a year that Palm makes a jump back into the cell phone market.  In the past year or so Palm hasnt' really been seen on the market.  Many people had lost confidence as they had issues with the 680 and 750 models.  Well now this year with the Palm Pre releasing they have announced the Palm Eos

This is looking to be the first North American phone that will run on the Palm WebOS.  As for the phone it seems pretty standard.

The specs we've seen come from

    • Quad-band GSM, 850/1900MHz HSDPA
    • 111 x 55 x 10.6mm (looks like the E71’s reign as the thinnest QWERTY smartphone is coming to an end)
    • 2.63-inch 320 x 400 capacitive display
    • 4GB storage
    • Price: $349 (pre-rebate)
    • Camera: 2 megapixel fixed focus digital camera and flash / video capture
    • Connectivity: Bluetooth 2.1 w/ A2DP and EDR, USB 2.0 via micro USB
    • Removable 1150 mAh battery (4 hours 3G talk time)
    • Messaging: SMS, MMS (picture and video only), integrated IM client
    • Contact sync with AT&T Address Book
    • MediaNet
    • Cellular Video
    • Email: POP3, IMAP4, and EAS support
    • A-GPS
    • Audio: WAV, MP3, AAC, AAC+ ringtones
    • Video Playback: MPEG4, H.264, H.263

This new phone looks like it will help get Palm back in the game, or at least get a foot in the door.  One nice feature is that it will have North American 3G, which has definitely something that's been lacking in some recent phones that have been released.

Only time will tell how well the phone will do but it does give people a choice.

  • New Android Phone
Posted on April 29, 2009 by Pure Mobile

So Samsung has finally annouced the I7500.  This is going to be there first Android phone and a lot of people are eagerly anticipating the new phone.  The new phone looks rather impressive actually.  It will carry all the standard phone goodies like being a quad band phone, 5 MP Camera, MicroSD support, but it will also have some extras like 8GB of internal memory, Wi-Fi, and even hand writting recognition.

One cool feature the phone will have is geotagging.  This is a feature that allows you to take a photo and then "tag" the location of where it was taken.

This will be Samsung's first attempt at a Android phone.  There is going to be some stiff competition as almost all major manufacturers are planning on releasing an Android phone this year.

The Samsung I7500 so far has been anounced for O2 in Europe but it does support T-Mobile 3G (1700Mhz band) so it does give a suspecion that T-Mobile in the US will be getting it somewhere down the line.

For now the expected release is some time in June 2009.  Keep checking back our blog for a full review as soon the Samsung I7500 is out for a full review.

  • Solar Panel Cell Phones
Posted on April 22, 2009 by Pure Mobile

Well today is Earth Day.  This year it is even more celebrated because everyone is starting to realize how much we, as a world, have to come together and start taking care of our planet.  We are seeing more and more technologies go "green" and this is no exception with cell phones

    Reading an article on

"Another cell phone is getting a solar panel slapped on its surface, showing that going solar is juuuust starting to become all the rage among mobile phone makers. At least in a limited way."

The specs of the phone are still limited

"AU (KDDI) and Sharp are presenting a new phone in the Japanese market that has a solar panel embedded in its lid. Users can leave it in the sun for up to 10 minutes in order to generate enough energy for 1 minute of communication or 2 hours on standby"

Now really that isn't too much time and it will take hours if not days to charge your phone in the sun, but at least it's a step in the right direction and hopefully this will become more common in the future.

  • Waterproof Cell Phones
Posted on April 16, 2009 by Pure Mobile

From the weird files.  So CTIA has come and gone this year and we came across this interesting story over at

So it turns out that a big surprise to a lot of people was the Fujitsu booth.  They were showing off a cell phone that was water proof.  Turns out Sanyo and Fujitsu both make serveral waterproof phones to cater to the Japanese market. says

Apparently, in Japan, folks spend a lot of time in the bath. Japanese bathtubs are much deeper and larger than American tubs, and they're more conducive to lounging around. Japanese folks swear by the health benefits of long, hot, frequent baths. Also, in a crowded society, the bath is one place you can get perfect privacy, and some peace and quiet.

It's actually really interesting because goes on to say

[That] an entire waterproof offshoot of the consumer-electronics industry has popped up: waterproof TVs, waterproof cell phones, and of course, waterproof cell phones with TV capability. Because why should you have to stop a nice, long soak to answer the phone? Makes perfect sense...

It's really interesting that people actually are like this.  You rarely see this in North America.  Most people take a quick-ish shower and go on with their day, but Japanese people not only like taking baths but they also like features on the phones.  So as soon as phones started appearing being water proof it became a standard feature most people wanted
