BlackBerry has announced the Z30, their latest and easily most powerful phone yet. The new BlackBerry flagship features a five inch screen, an updated BlackBerry 10 Operating System, a massive battery, upgraded speakers, and a 1.7 gigahertz processor. This phone is a followup to the Z10, the phone BlackBerry unveiled at the beginning of the year to some acclaim. Since then, BlackBerry has made improvements to its operating system but has hardly made gains in terms of public perception, with rumours swirling that the company is looking to sell. While that remains to be seen, we have gotten our hands on the first batch of accessories for this new smartphone. Here are some of our favourites!

    BlackBerry Transform Case

The BlackBerry Transform Case for the BlackBerry Z30 is a very unique case from the Canadian smartphone maker. The back of the case is designed to split in two, turning your regular case into a stand for your Z30. This case snaps on easily, comes in different colours, and ships with a screen protector as well.

    BlackBerry Flip Case

This flip case for the BlackBerry Z30 features a flip enclosure that covers the entire front of the phone, flipping downward to display your screen. This case incorporates power-saving technology, extending the life of your battery while protecting your smartphone at the same time. This leather case allows you to see the notification LED and is very durable.

    BlackBerry Leather Swivel

A staple of the BlackBerry accessory lineup. The BlackBerry Leather Swivel is your traditional BlackBerry case for your BlackBerry Z30. Snapping onto your belt, this case keeps your phone close by and allows you to always see the notification LED on your BlackBerry Z30. Like the previous case, this leather case also features power-saving technology, a magnetic closure, and a soft interior, ensuring your phone doesn't get scratched while its in your holster.

  • Apple Announces New iPhone 5S
Posted on September 13, 2013 by keith holland

Apple has announced the successor to the Apple iPhone 5, the Apple iPhone 5S. The phone was revealed, along with its tech brother the iPhone 5C, at a press event in Cupertino, California on September 10th. Lets take a look at what sets this phone apart from the iPhone 5 and what new features Apple has introduced with this iteration of its massively popular iPhone line.

The first, and biggest, innovation worth discussing is the introduction of the fingerprint reader embedded in the home button of the new iPhone. In addition to serving as a means to lock and unlock your device, this fingerprint reader introduces a bevy of new features such as the ability to pay for songs, movies, and apps through either Apple's App Store or iTunes using just your fingerprint. Well this is cool, when developers get their hands on this tech there is sure to be an influx of ideas on how to further optimize this potentially revolutionary tech.

In addition to that small piece of news, the iPhone 5S will be arriving in an all-new colour. Apple calls it Champagne, but lets be real, this is a gold iPhone. I was originally skeptical, but I have since warmed up to the idea of a golden iPhone. It could have turned out very cheesy, but thankfully this golden iPhone is gorgeous.

In addition to the outside, the inside of the iPhone 5S got a serious makeover. The new iPhone 5S ships with an all new 64-bit, A7 processor. This tech doesn't just improve over the iPhone, it doubles its processing power and introduces the world to console level graphics on a handheld device. In fact, the new processor makes the iPhone 5S 56 times as powerful as the original iPhone.

While there will always be skeptics, I think the Apple iPhone 5S has delivered on all counts and will be a rousing success for Apple. The upgrades as excellent, the potential for the fingerprint scanner is pretty much limitless, and the new colour is a thing to behold. Check out the new iPhone when it hits stores September 20th.

  • Sony Unveils The Sony Xperia Z1
Posted on September 5, 2013 by keith holland

In what was a rush of announcements internationally, Sony unveiled the Sony Xperia Z1 today as well. This phone is built to succeed Sony's current flagship, the Xperia Z. Built to be a processing powerhouse with a crisp HD screen, the Sony Xperia Z1 is looking like it could join the upper echelon of smartphones, thrusting Sony near the forefront of the industry.

First things first, this is probably Sony's best build ever. The Xperia Z1 features a lot of glass. The front and back are both built with glass, making things smooth and stylish. The phone is held together by a single, machined piece of aluminum, that softens the edge of the Xperia Z1's edges and doing so about as fashionably as possible. Inside, the phone is juiced with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor supercharged to 2.2 GHz and features a 20.7 megapixel camera, a large improvement on the Xperia Z's camera. The display measures in at 5 inches and is a full HD display.

Like most of Sony's top-end phones, the Xperia Z1 is 100% waterproof. The waterproofing has actually been improved in this model, with ports like the headphone jack no longer requiring protective plugs.

While this phone is certainly impressive, it remains to be seen where exactly it will fit in the changing mobile landscape. Many phones are on the verge of updates including two heavy-hitters, the HTC One and Apple iPhone 5. It will be very interesting to see how this phone stacks up to phones in this generation and the next one as words like octo-core and 41 megapixels float around in terms of what kind of muscle we will soon see in our smartphones. Needless to say, this phone is a bold statement for Sony who signal that they are ready to compete with the big boys instead of just lurking just below excellence like they did with the original Sony Xperia Z.

  • Microsoft went on a shopping spree, buying up Nokia's phone and services division for a cool $7.2 Billion dollars. Nokia's line of phones, probably the most popular phones running the Windows OS, are now the property of the PC and Software giant. This move is being made to facilitate growth and improve Microsoft's position in the smartphone market. In addition to the buy, some suits are going to be shifting spots in the hierarchy of Nokia with most staying in the company, but maybe one, that being now-former Nokia CEO Stephen Elop, moving into the big chair at Microsoft once now-CEO Steve Ballmer vacates his spot.

Microsoft's deal will allow them to partner up more throughly with Nokia.

The purchase breaks down like this. Microsoft is paying $5 Billion for pretty much all of Nokia's phone division. $2.2 Billion of the purchase price will go towards acquiring and licensing Nokia's numerous patents. As alluded to in the opening paragraph, where things get interesting is the moving of pieces in both companies hierarchies. The worst kept secret in the tech industry is the fact that Microsoft's CEO Steve Ballmer will be leaving his post sometime in the near future. It is believed that Nokia's former CEO Stephen Elop, who is getting shifted to Executive Vice-President of the devices and services division, could be next in line for the big job at Microsoft. While that remains to be seen and will play out over time, it certainly is interesting times at Microsoft.

It'll be interesting to see what Microsoft can do to boost Nokia's promising line of phones. While not having the reach of IOS or Android, the Windows OS does have a lot of potential. It will be very interesting to see what greater integration will mean for these two mobile giants, and if, with their powers combined, they can finally tackle their common enemy, Apple and Samsung.

  • Samsung is getting the jump on Apple in more ways than one in unveiling the Galaxy Gear smartwatch on September 4th. The unveil precedes Apple's press event on September 10th and the companies desire to release their own iteration of the smartwatch. Samsung is hoping that beating Apple to the punch will translate into results for the company, and finally get the Apple monkey off their back as they set the market for smartwatches on their own terms.

The Samsung Galaxy Gear is set to ship in five different colours. This includes white, orange, grey, black, and gold. The curved screen that Samsung has shown off at tech events over the years will not be utilized by the Galaxy Gear as of yet, but by the sounds of things, the goal is to eventually produce a smartwatch with a curved screen. This certainly depends on how well the new device does at market and whether or not it is worthy of future investment. What we will likely see instead is a square OLED screen around 2.5 inches across.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic Pictures of the supposed Samsung Galaxy Gear Patent

Functionally, it appears as if the Galaxy Gear will feature advanced optimization with other Galaxy products like the Samsung Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Tab. Some potential features include the ability to sync your watch instantaneously through an app with your phone, allowing you to do things like read text messages on your watch seamlessly. For those thinking that the watch will replace your phone or tablet, that is highly unlikely as features such as messaging and calling will need to be synced up with your existing device via a Bluetooth connection.

While we are speculating, this is brand new tech. We are likely in for more than a few surprises come September 4th when Samsung holds its unveil for the Samsung Galaxy Gear. Whether or not Apple responds sooner or later with the iWatch remains to be seen, but the first shot across the bow of the smartphone war will be fired by Samsung.

  • The HTC One is by and large considered the top phone on the market right now. It features superior design in the form of a solid aluminum chassis, true stereo sound speakers, and internal components that put it at the top performance-wise. As we near the end of this phone generation and proceed towards a new iPhone, Galaxy, and possibly HTC phone, we thought it made sense to take a look at our top three favourite phone cases for the HTC One.

    The Otterbox Defender One

The Defender Series by Otterbox continues the brand's strong tradition towards protecting your devices. This time around the brand is focusing on the popular HTC One. The Defender Series uses triple layer protection to protect your device from scratches, dust, drops, bumps, and shocks. The layers include a clear protective membrane around the device, a hard polycarbonate shell, and a durable silicone layer. This case also ships with a belt clip holster and, of course, still allows full use of your phone's key ports and buttons. Take your phone wherever you want to and have to go with the Defender Series from Otterbox.

    G-Zed Mobile One

A high quality TPU skin designed to custom fit your phone, while allowing full access to the ports and controls. This lightweight case from G-Zed Mobile protects your HTC One while maintaining a low-profile, keeping your phone feeling thin and light without compromising durability. Preserve the investment in your phone by protecting it with a stylish and affordable skin from G-Zed Mobile.

    Incipio Feather Shine

Featuring a rigid Plextonium frame, the Incipio Feather Shine is a best-seller. Built to be lightweight yet durable, the Feather Shine weighs in at just 0.5 ounces and surrounds your device with extreme protection. Shipping in multiple colours, this case from Incipio suits any style and is a surefire hit.

  • Nokia Lumia 625 Phone Review
Posted on August 21, 2013 by keith holland

The Nokia Lumia line features some of the quirkiest and coolest looking phones on the market. The vibrant colours, the detachable backplates, the Lumia line has a lot of personality. For what the phones, at least the lower end models, in performance, they make up in style. The Nokia Lumia 625 is a cool phone, with weak guts, but it makes it up in style and customization.

Like other models in the Nokia Lumia line, the 625 features interchangeable back covers. These colours are expressive, and just plain fun. While the design build isn’t the quality of say the HTC One, the Lumia 625 impresses in a different way just as much. One thing you do notice as you use this phone though is the low-quality screen. It is a mid-range phone, and it seems they made all the concessions on the screen. It really is the achilles heel of this device.

One place the phone does make hay though is on the hardware front. While a dual-core, 1.2 GHz processor doesn’t seem like much, it runs the phones Windows 8 Operating System fluidly. Just like the colours of the phone, this highly customizable tile-based OS is fun and really suits the phone. The only thing that holds it back, like any Windows phone, is the complete lack of apps for the device.

Ultimately, this mid-range phone is just that. It doesn’t perform with the big guys, but it makes the best with what it has. The Lumia 625 is a cool phone with limitations. It’s customizable back covers and OS are a hit, but things like a poor screen make it obvious that this isn’t a flagship device from Nokia, just a fun one. Sometimes thats all a phone needs to be.

    Pros

    -Fun colours

-The Windows 8 OS performs well

    -Low price tag

    Cons

    -Low-quality screen

    -Limited app selection

-Not a good choice for gamers

    Specs

    Weight : 159 grams

    Size : 133.3 x 72.3 x 9.2 mm

    Screen : 4.7 inches

OS : Microsoft Windows Phone 8

    Camera : Rear-Facing 5 megapixel camera

  • The case is building towards Apple announcing at least one new phone at their press event on September 10th. While it is a near certainty that one of those products will be heavily rumoured and leak riddled iPhone 5C, the true successor to the iPhone 5 is still somewhat shrouded in mystery. Is it the iPhone 6? Is it the iPhone 5S? Nobody is 100% sure. What we do THINK we know is that it MIGHT come with something new to mobile phones and is sure to really change how we secure our phones.

Leaked photos showing a new design for the home button, and the ever-present rumour of a fingerprint sensor seem to indicate that the new iPhone will include a fingerprint scanner as its key feature. The leaked photos show that there is definitely something new under the hood of the new iPhone and while hardware comes and goes, the iPhone doesn't change much physically as the versions come and go. It's certainly worth noticing as Apple's press event approaches next month.

Additionally, another new rumour has popped up recently, and it's got a golden ring to it. According to, get this, more leaked photos, the new iPhone 5S/6, may ship in two colours. The one you are used to and has become a staple of Apple products, and a new gold backed device. It certainly is an interesting design choice if true but I wouldn't put too much stock in it.

    Whaaaaaaaat?

Regardless of what comes next month, the world will certainly be watching as the world's most important electronics company gets set to unveil its newest phones. The world of mobile phones has changed quite a bit since the iPhone 5 launched last year. It will be interesting to see what comes next and how the world reacts to one of the world's biggest trend setters unleashing their next big thing.
