  • It had already been speculated that both Sprint and Verizon Wireless would eventually pick up RIM’s hot new BlackBerry Bold 9650 smartphone.  It appears that these speculations are starting to become facts as Sprint has recently announced that the BlackBerry Bold 9650 will be hitting store shelves on May 23rd.  Sprint customers who are clamoring over the BlackBerry device will be able to purchase this new mobile device for $199.99 after a $100 mail in rebate and 2 year contract.

This new BlackBerry device has several great features that will be sure to tempt any BlackBerry fan.  The new Bold 9650 is set to come with a 480 x 360 resolution display, BlackBerry OS 5, WiFi module and a 3.2 megapixel camera.  With specs like these it easy to see why various networks would want to pick up this device.  It is sure to be a huge hit among many smartphone users and BlackBerry customers.

It looks like Sprint is going to be getting the leg up on its competition by being the first cell phone provider to offer the new BlackBerry Bold 9650.  With a bevy of unique features the Bold 9650 figures to quickly become one of the better selling BlackBerry mobile devices, like the BlackBerry Storm 2.  I am sure that other cell phone providers will quickly follow suit once they see what kind of success Sprint will surely have with this new device.  Even at the sort of pricey point of $199 after mail in rebate this new BlackBerry phone is sure to be a best seller for both Sprint and BlackBerry.

  • In yet another internal memo it looks like the Sprint Hero is set to receive the Android 2.1 update in early May.  According to other internal memos the Hero was supposed to have had Android 2.1 last week so we can not really count on these memos to be highly accurate.  However, this latest news does come from two different sources.  The guys over at Android Guys got a customer service rep on the phone who said:

Agent (Jolly K): “I am sorry for misinformation. The updates says that Android 2.1 HTC Hero is being launched in the first week ok [sic] May”

HTC Hero 3G NAM White Telus Unlocked GSM Cellular Phone

At about the same time the fellas over at Phandroid got their hands on a camera shot of a memo indicating the same thing saying the Hero can expect the upgrade to Android 2.1 in early May.

For those of you wondering what the hold up might be Sprint is notorious for their update certification process.  If they even get the smallest inkling of a bug they will delay the roll out until the bug is fixed and can be re-tested.  So I am assuming there was some sort of last minute bug that appeared and Sprint is thoroughly testing any patches that were put in place to correct this problem.  While it might be a bit of a pain to have to wait on receiving your Android update it is much better than having several issues with your mobile device once the new OS is released.

Since Hero customers have waited this long I am sure that you can hold out for another week or two to ensure that your HTC Hero mobile phone will continue to work the way you would like it to after the release of the Android 2.1 operating system.

  • If you can not wait any longer for the Android 2.1 OS to come to the Samsung Moment you just might not have to wait any longer.  Thanks to a couple of members of SDX-Developers the highly anticipated Android update can finally be added to your Samsung mobile phone.  There are currently two different builds on the forum and both seem to work quite well.  It is being reported that both builds work with voice and data.  The only problem that users are reporting is a “faulty” marketplace.

Even though both of these builds that are designed to bring the Android 2.1 to the Samsung Moment are currently working without issues for most people there is still a slight chance that this new upgrade can wipe your phone.  If you are looking to perform this sort of addition to your mobile device then you are probably aware of the risks that come along with doing so.

While there is that slight chance that you might brick your Samsung phone it might just be worth it so that you can use the new Android 2.1 OS.  With all of the added features that are included with this new Android upgrade many Samsung users will wish that they made this switch much earlier than they did.  I for one am getting tired of waiting around for Samsung to bring this new Android update to my Moment mobile device.

    Apple Cell Phones

To get the new multitasking feature to work you just double click the home button to see a list of your apps and then you can just tap to switch between the apps that are running.  The new system actually runs the services apps need in the background which means the apps do not need to do this themselves.  While this does not make it true multitasking it is still very effective in getting the job done.

There are seven services that the new system can run in the background.  These services include background audio, Voice over IP, which means you can receive calls in the background, locations services for GPS and social networking, push notifications, task completion so that you can finish downloading in the background and fast app switching which allows apps to sleep and resume instantly.

The one service that is notably missing from the new operating system is the ability to manage a conversation using IM or Twitter.  This might be a big omission for some people but the vast majority of iPhone users should be pleasantly surprised  with the effectiveness of this new iPhone OS update.  One downside to the latest update is that this new OS will only be available for the 3GS and 3rd generation iPod Touches.  The 3G and below will not be able to support the new OS due to a hardware limitation.

  • So it finally appears that a May release for the successor to the BlackBerry Tour 9630 is official.  An internal website where Bank of America employees can order new handsets shows the device listed as coming to Verizon in May.  In addition to a May arrival the website also confirms that this new device is set to be a member of the Bold family.  While the model number is still question it is exciting news nonetheless.  I can easily see this new device taking the model number of 9750 to keep RIM’s naming convention in order but it has been rumored that this successor device will carry the number 9650.  Since this new device is so similar to the Tour 9630 it could be sort of confusing to have two nearly identical phones using the same numbering convention within the 96xx family.

    BlackBerry Cell Phones

I am really hoping that this device receives an official announcement at the upcoming WES conference.  Many BlackBerry fans have been eagerly awaiting the release of a successor to the BlackBerry Tour 9630 and deserve an official announcement along will all of the different features that this device will have.  As a BlackBerry user myself I am especially excited to see this new Tour device when it is released next month.  The BlackBerry Tour 9630 has been one of the better BlackBerry devices since its inception.  I am expecting more of the same with its successor.

This new device is also expected to include BlackBerry’s new push to talk application.  This new application was a recent big announcement for BlackBerry and it makes sense that it would be included with any new device that is going to hit the market.

  • Not even a whole two months removed from announcing their Windows Phone 7 Series Microsoft is back today with another event that is expected to reveal its Project Pink lineup which will include two new handsets known as the “Pure” and “Turtle.”  It is unknown whether or not they will run Windows Phone 7 or a completely different OS.

With the start of their event Microsoft has made a couple announcements regarding the specs of these two new phones.  Here are the specs for the Kin One.
    · Compact keypad for one-handed texting
    · Multi-touch display
    · 5 megapixel camera with LED flash and SD video recording
    · Wi-Fi
    · GPS
    · External mono speaker
    · 4GB internal memory (enough for 1,000 songs)
    · Media powered by Zune
With a slightly different design the specs for the Kin Two are also slight different.  Here is what this device is expected to come with.
    · Horizontal sliding QWERTY keypad
    · Multi-touch display
    · 8 megapixel camera with LED flash and HD video recording
    · Wi-Fi
    · GPS
    · External stereo speaker
    · 8GB internal memory (enough for 2,000 songs)
    · Media powered by Zune

Windows Phone 7 is about simplifying people’s lives, whereas KIN is all about amplifying people’s lives. It represents Microsoft “cranking social up to 11″ for “people who live to be connected, share, express and relate to their friends and family.” Don't forget about getting your Bluetooth headset as well.

These two new devices are designed to keep people more in touch with their friends and acquaintances via various social media websites.  One of the cool features of the Kin is that it comes with KIN Studio. “It’s your phone, online, on any web browser.” With KIN Studio, all of your call logs, texts, contacts images, videos, and more are stored in the cloud and viewable in a pretty nifty looking timeline. Pretty much everything you do on the KIN is compatible with geo-tagging, so if you forget where you were when you took a particular picture or video you can go online and refresh your memory thanks to the integration of Bing Maps

I am sure there will be a lot more announcements regarding Project Pink coming from the current Microsoft event and the availability of getting it as an unlocked cell phone.

  • If you are currently in the market for a new cell phone you should look into Verizon Wireless’ Palm Pre Plus and Pixi Plus.  The mobile phone company has just announced a price reduction for two of their more popular phones.  The Pre Plus will drop to a price of $49.99 while the Pixi Plus will be even lower at $29.99.  If you are in the market for more than once cell phone these two devices also qualify for Verizon’s popular buy one get one free offer as well.  Of course both handsets will require a two year agreement to get these prices but at these prices that is a no brainer.  Also, to further entice consumers Verizon has dropped the price of the webOS mobile hotspot service to $0 (down from $40) for both new and current customers.  The mobile hotspot offer is not going to be advertised on the web right away however customers will be told of the free hotspot promotion when they purchase the other mobile devices.

    Palm Cell Phones

This appears to be a fantastic deal that Verizon Wireless is offering.  The Palm Pre Plus and Pixi Plus are two of their more popular phones.  If you are on a budget and looking to get a great smartphone you certainly can not go wrong with either of these devices.  Throw in the fact that you can also get a free handset when you purchase one can lower the price dramatically if you were to split the costs with a friend or family member.  The addition of the mobile hotspot is just icing on the cake and truly makes this a deal that you can not pass up.

  • When it comes to wireless carriers and wireless data one might think that AT&T transmits to largest amount of wireless data.  Well if this is the case then you might find the results of a recent study published by ABI Research to be quite interesting.  According to their study ABI Research says Verizon is actually the largest provider of wireless data with Sprint coming in second also beating out AT&T.

The two companies, Verizon and Sprint, combined to handle 63% of all wireless data in 2009.  This 63% equates to 16 billion MB more data than AT&T.  ABI claims these numbers have more to do with AT&T’s smaller 3G coverage and the prevalence of data cards on the two EV-DO networks.  However, ABI is predicting that AT&T will be able to overtake Sprint by 2012.

The recent findings of this study by ABI Research are pretty interesting.  Like many others I would have expected AT&T to lead the way in wireless data sent with the iPhone and growing list of smartphones that they offer.  Apparently the type of coverage a network can provide can have a huge impact on the amount data that is transmitted via their network.  As we all know AT&T’s network can be unreliable at times so it would make perfect sense that Verizon and Sprint would be able to send more data through their network.

    Deal of the week

With plans already under way to improve their wireless network AT&T is taking to necessary steps when it comes to having a leading wireless network.  When all of these changes are in place I expect AT&T’s wireless data numbers to increase substantially as they are likely to attract new unlocked cell phone customers with a better cell phone network.

  • The odds that the Samsung Galaxy S will soon find a home in the US have skyrocketed recently with the FCC awarding certification for the newest smartphone from Samsung.  The Galaxy S is set to support the AT&T friendly 3G bands and would represent a huge shot in the arm to AT&T’s Android offerings which is currently limited to the Motorola BACKFLIP.  While it is not 100% certain that the Galaxy S is headed for AT&T this is what many mobile device experts are forecasting for this new phone.

Samsung i7500 Glaxy Black Unlocked GSM Cellular Phone

The Samsung Galaxy S is supposed to be one of the best Android devices when it finally hits the US market.  The fact that it is more than likely coming to the AT&T network will be welcomed news for all of the AT&T customers who have been patiently waiting for some other Android devices to hit the market.  Since AT&T currently only carries one Android device at the moment the Galaxy S is sure to be a huge hit when it finally arrives in the US.

The Samsung Galaxy S is set to come with the Android 2.1 OS and be one of the most popular devices on the market.  This announcement that the FCC has awarded the Galaxy S certification means that this device is that much closer to being released in the US market.  I know that I am personally excited to see what all of the buzz has been about regarding the Galaxy S.  Being a huge fan of some of the other Android phones I am sure that I will not be disappointed when I am finally able to get my hands on one of these Galaxy S devices from Motorola.

  • In a recent interview with Bloomberg, HTC CFO Cheng Hui-ming was quoted as saying that HTC is currently exploring options to possibly create their own smartphone OS.  Cheng stated that HTC has no plans to abandon support for Microsoft’s Windows Phone and Google’s Android while exploring these options to create their own OS.  One thing Cheng was not so eager to discuss was HTC’s rumored plans to acquire Palm, the popular mobile device company.

Many analysts believe that HTC having their own operating system would ultimately benefit the cellular company by giving them more control over their products.  However, to oversee its initial and continued development would require a significant amount of resources that HTC might not have at the current moment.

    HTC Cell Phones

If HTC was to develop their own OS it would be interesting to see how it compares to Windows Phone OS and the Google Android OS.  HTC would certainly be venturing into a new territory in the mobile device market.  Ultimately I do agree with the analysts that this move of HTC creating their own OS would be a good idea.  By having so much more control over their devices HTC will be able to tailor their mobile phones to their customer’s wants and needs.  If they created their own operating system they would be able to add specific features to their phones that perhaps Windows or Google’s Android do not currently have.   Also, by creating their own OS HTC will be allowing for greater variety within the smartphone marketplace.  This is something that I am sure many consumers will appreciate as it will give them even more devices to choose from and select the phones that fit their current lifestyle the best.
