  • It has now been revealed that a Sprint employee who leaked sales information of the Unlocked HTC (EVO 4G ) has been fired. The employee, whose name has not been released, disclosed information regarding sales of the HTC EVO 4G on the XDA-Developers forum. However, the information that was released turned out to be fake and so it is safe to assume that the employee is now regretting what he did.

While the actual number of units sold on the first two days was 66,483, Sprint had released a statement stating that sales of the HTC EVO 4G had resulted in record breaking numbers. In fact, it was claimed that the number of phones sold was so great that most stock supplies had sold out.  However, a later retraction by Sprint stated that the total number of HTC EVO 4G phones sold was on par with those of the Samsung Instinct, and Palm Pre combined and not greater.

While it is anyone’s guess as to why Sprint might have fired the employee, here is one guess. The number of 66,483 is well, quite unflattering and as such it might only include the sales from the actual Sprint stores and not fromother retail stores such as Radio Shack, walmart or Best Buy. In other words, there are chances that there would be a much higher sales figure, had such success also been included in the final sales total. But since the employee had already published the figures, it reflected quite poorly on Sprint and after tracking him down, Sprint must have let him go.

Sprint managed to find the employee located in Florida and sent a member of their taskforce to personally let him know that he was being let off. However, according to us, Sprint went through all this trouble mainly on account of the fact that they thought they would have sold many more products. Do you think, if Sprint managed to sell 300,000 HTC Unlocked ( EVO 4G ) mobiles they would have gone through such trouble.

  • Do you have an Unlocked Verizon BlackBerry Storm 9550 and have suddenly been facing certain problems in regards to some BlackBerry services? If so, then you are certainly not alone as reports have shown that users of unlocked versions of Verizon’s BlackBerry Storm have had their services mysteriously disabled. While it is still not certain as to why such services have been cut off, we believe that a single group has initiated this disable. It’s anybody’s guess as to who has cut off the service, whether T-Mobile, RIM or Verizon. Although some users have been able to get some form of data transfer working over EDGE, the main problem lies with the service books, which are mainly used for communications between RIM’s servers and the carrier. The Verizon BlackBerry Storm is also fitted with a SIM card slot that can be used for roaming n any 2G networks, even though it is primarily a CDMA mobile. This clearly shows that T-Mobile is now concerned with people also buying their phones and not just their services. Any support tickets that people submit to T-Mobile are simply answered with an inadequate “not our phone, not our problem”, which frankly if you ask me is just rude.

While such a type of blacklisting is not something that is characteristic of T-Mobile, it is similar to Verizon, which used to not allow GPS functions so that they could then only work on the subscription navigation plans of Verizon. While we are still guessing, it is possible that RIM and Verizon wanted to prevent any defectors for T-Mobile. There have been certain reports from users claiming that Verizon is not at all involved in such issues as Verizon and Vodafone are getting ‘friendly’ to the point that they are both interested in having this scenario work for them. We are still waiting for any official confirmation from T-Mobile on the issue.

  • According to the recent fillings of the FCC, another Garminfone/nuvifone is being released by Garmin-Asus. These recent filings show that there is a requirement for 850 / 1900 MHz which suggests that AT&T might be used as its carrier. While the Garminfone was launched by T-Mobile recently, it is quite difficult to see what exactly the marketing strategy of Garmin-Asus is, as the rights to the nuvifone might be exclusively given to AT&T or Garmin-Asus might have permanently switched over to Garminfone. Nothing will be certain till the E600 launches out.

Irrespective of what the probable marketing situation might be, chances are that Garmin-Asus will once again make use of Android, more so since the effective uninspiring launch of the G60 on AT&T. The G60 made use of simple Linux; however, the Android is stated to be released on all Garmin-Asus navigation centric mobile phones. As there is still no public announcement made by Garmin-Asus regarding the features of the new phone, one will have to wait and watch to see whether the E600 will be an improvement over T-Mobile’s handset.

As a means of gaining as much support as possible in North America, Garmin-Asus introduced the nuvifone G60 on AT&T. However, since sales of the G60 were not as per as estimated, Garmin-Asus quickly rolled out the Garminfone on T-Mobile. Although not certain, we speculated that the nuvifone brand name is being exclusively owned by AT&T, why else would Garmin-Asus not use this branding anywhere else in the market. In fact, all phones manufactured by ASUS go through the very same joint venture of Garmin-Asus. Hence, it was no surprise to find that with the release of the FCC filings, a new nuvifone was on the horizon. The new E600, PDA Phone, is set to be launched in the 850 / 1900 MHz spectrum which leads us to believe that AT&T will be the most obvious carrier. If not AT&T, another carrier from the north would be the best bet.

  • With the release of the Unlocked IPhone 4 a few days ago, many developers and phone manufacturers have now started paying attention and worrying that their sales would drop. However, one manufacturer that does not worry about the iPhone 4 is that of Sprint as according to the Chief Financial Officer of the Company, while the iPhone might have certain features that stand out against other manufacturers, HTC’s EVO 4G, carried by Sprint, can hold its own and prevent current users  from flocking to the iPhone. There might be some truth in this considering EVO is the first 4G mobile launched in the country.

Says Robert Brust, Sprint’s CFO, “We know that with the launch of the iPhone from Apple there is an air of worry with many manufacturers, but Sprint is not one of them as our EVO 4G is the first such phone in the nation. We also expect our end of year results to be much better than last year.”

“Every year when there is a new introduction in the market from Apple, most U.S carriers wonder ‘what if’- What if our customers leave us and decide to go in for the iPhone. As people’s contracts tend to expire, one expects that they will change over to AT&T’s iPhone,” says Brust. Last year it was stated that the Sprint Palm Pre would be able to overcome the effect of the iPhone which was not the case. However, according to Brust, the Pre was a phone for those that did not want the iPhone, whereas the HTC  Unlocked ( EVO 4G )  is a good option instead of the iPhone.

This might be true as the EVO 4G is simply stunning as apart from the battery life, the display, responsiveness and speed of the device were lauded. It seems that Sprint is not the only one excited about the EVO 4G as sales of the phone have increased within the last week.

  • Considering the fact that Unlocked Google Nexus is now making waves in the world ,it is not at all surprising to find that the latest version of the Android has also made its way to the  Moto DROID and T-mobile myTouch 3G. It was recently announced that Android 2.2 was soon going to make its way to these phones.  A memo confirming the deployment of the new Android update was released to TmoNews stating that the myTouch 3G, myTouch Slide and DROID would be able to avail of the latest Google releases. While there have still not been any confirmations as to when such releases would be made available for the mobiles, you can easily expect them in the near future.

A statement released by T-Mobile states, “We constantly endeavor to provide our esteemed customers with the latest, innovative devices so as to improve their lives. At the same time, we also strive to ensure that our existing products are constantly updated. We constantly work hard in ensuring that updates are constantly provided. If you are an existing user of the myTouch 3G or the myTouch Slide, you can now avail of the latest version of Google Android viz. version 2.2. This means that all users of previous visions of Android will be able to stay up to date with the latest version.”

With the introduction of Motorola Backflip  Unlocked Android 2.2, users can look forward to various updates such as the modified version of the Faves gallery. It will now become possible to automatically get updates from your 20 most recent contacts. This effectively implies that you do not have to sift through less important calls in order to find what you want.

There is also an improved Genius Button application, which is similar to the Genius Button of the Slide. It can show you traffic mapping, your next appointment as well as give you directions

  • A news story has surfaced from T-Mobile that they are offering a special Father’s Day gift- free Unlocked Cell-Phones. T-Mobile is planning on launching a commercial on June 19 to further quell any rumors, so we can then know whether this is true or not. Although this story has yet to be confirmed by T-Mobile, from the looks of it, it might actually happen according to a copy of the commercial script recently obtained. In the commercial, a voice over says, “Ladies and gentlemen, mark your calendar as this Saturday, starting from 8 a.m. T-Mobile is now planning on launching an unprecedented act of giving away all phones in its stores absolutely free. T-Mobile has taken another initiative in customer satisfaction by ensuring that families are put first.”

While this is a great promotional offer by T-Mobile, do not get your hopes up too high as chances are that you will not like the range of mobiles on offer. For instance, right now the best mobile that is available in the T-Mobile stores is the myTouch 3G Slide, which just cannot compare with other phones available from other carriers currently in the market.  Another phone is the HTC HD2 which is great should you want to use it to watch movies, but the operating system of Windows Mobile 6.5 leaves a lot to be desired. On the other hand, if you are currently searching for any new unlocked mobile phone, then this T-Mobile offer would do well for you.

Be advised that this offer is still not yet fully confirmed, so do not get your hopes up on getting a free phone. At the same time, there are chances this offer can fall under a particular subscription plan. If you have been keeping up to date with promotional plans recently been offered by different mobile carriers, you will realize that more often than not, promotion like this would involve users having to enter a new, two year contract with the carrier company.

  • A recent announcement by Sprint regarding the release of Unlocked HTC (EVO 4G) with WiMax resulted in most mobile enthusiasts going bezerk. There was just one problem with the release, it would go live in only certain cities such as Lubbock and Texas, while other bigger cities such as Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York missed the cut. While many were disappointed at this development, they need not be as the Sprint WiMax is now being rolled out in these metropolitans.

There have been multiple claims from people in cities such as Los Angeles claiming that they have started seeing pop ups of Sprint WiMax on their HTC EVO 4G devices. However, this is only limited to a few areas within the city. Certain selected areas like the west side of town, downtown as well as locations near the 405 freeway have reported such sightings on their Unlocked Mobile Devices. While there has still not been any official confirmation from Sprint with regards to this provision of Sprint WiMax in these areas, we hope to have an official release statement from the website in a few days.

There have been rumors of Sprint doing some testing in certain areas of Los Angeles and so in case you currently experience Sprint WiMax, do not get your hopes too high as it could be revoked any time soon. Sprint has confirmed that WiMax will go live in Los Angeles later this year, however, there has still not been any actual date confirmation. If you do happen to stumble upon an area with such WiMax/4G network, chances are that it is purely due to some testing that is currently going on by Sprint in that particular area. Sprint is undertaking testing, building as well as optimizing of the network before finally deciding to throw WiMax open to the public. So when the testing phase is done with, be prepared to go to WiMax-less phones.

  • Remember one of our previous articles stating that there were an unbelievable number of sales made by Sprint in the sale of their HTC EVO 4G? Well, apparently it did not happen. Sprint says that it “miscalculated” the number of devices it actually sold. We had earlier reported that the EVO 4G carried by Sprint had broken its earlier records in a single day and sold three times the number devices that the Samsung Instinct and Unlocked Palm Pre devices sold in their first three days together. This came as quite a surprise to many around the country.

However, a retraction statement printed by Sprint suggests that it had overstated the total number of devices sold on launch day, “inadvertedly”. Instead of selling three times the number of devices of the Samsung Instinct and the Palm Pre, the EVO 4G sold a total number in line with these two phones. A press release of Sprint acknowledges the error  stating, “We had previously stated that the total number of launch day sales of the EVO 4G was six times greater than the sales of the Samsung Instinct for the same day and nearly twice that of the Palm Pre. While sales for the HTC Unlocked ( EVO 4G ) continue to rise, we erred in comparison of these phones as the total number of sales of the EVO 4G were in line with those of the Instinct and Palm Pre. We now acknowledge our error in judgment and state that the total sales of the EVO 4G on launch day were in line with those of the Instinct and Palm Pre over the first three days.”

Well, there you have it, a complete apology directly on the website. So what is the final word? While, we should credit Sprint for actually going ahead and printing an apology, they should have really got their act together in the first place before going ahead and publishing untrue facts.
