  • The "Great" Exodus
Posted on December 22, 2008 by Pure Mobile

Friday again and it's on week until Christmas.  It's coming to that time of the year where people are starting to call loved ones and spending more time on the phone and it turns out that more people are turning toward cell phone only lives.  That means less people are getting home phone lines and opting for the cell phone as their only phone.

On a recent article on discovery.com they said

...The portion of homes with cell phones but no landlines has grown to 18 percent, led by adults living with unrelated roommates, renters and young people, according to federal figures released Wednesday.

An additional 13 percent of households have landlines but get all or nearly all calls on their cells, the survey showed. Taken together, that means about three in 10 households are essentially reachable only on their wireless phones.

That is not very surprising as more and more people are finding that being always available is very convenient

Another article from Howstuffworks.com explain the reasons for the switch

...People who have made the switch cite several benefits. Wireless communication saves money on local and long-distance phone charges, frees people up from their desks and prevents having to lay new cables. Laymen Global, the New Jersey company, saved $4,600 on its phone bill by forgoing landlines

Now this isn't saying go out and cancel your home line but it is something to think about.  With more and more people wanting to be always available or less people spending time at the house it is a nice option.  You no longer have to remember phone numbers as you always have your phone book with you.  If you haven't considered it you can always go to puremobile.com and see what phones are available.

  • Where Cell Phones Are Going
Posted on December 16, 2008 by Pure Mobile

This year has seen some major leaps forward in the mobile handheld industry.

In a recent article by PCMag this is exactly what they discussed

...[j]ust two years ago, the mobile phone market was pretty ho-hum. You had your candy bar phones and your flip phones. There were BlackBerry devices and Windows Mobile phones. Those phones had calendars and contact lists, and a few other apps that were too annoying to use. Few people ever added any new applications to their phones. Surfing the Web was for emergency use only, since it was slow and ugly.

Fast forward to this year. You've got the must-have iPhone. For open source fans, there's the Android phone. The idea of shopping for, buying and downloading new apps isn't remotely unusual. Browsing online means seeing Web sites that look just like they do on a computer.

It's the ultimate dream of the mobile phone industry, but it wasn't created by the mobile phone industry -- the dream was actualized by outsiders. The result is that today, the traditional phone makers are playing catch-up and some are in such a struggle to do so that their future existence is uncertain.

What it means is that since the Apple iPhone was released in July of 2007 the cell phone industry hasn't been the same.  We've gone from regular old phones like the Motorola Razr that really had one function to phones like the upcoming Nokia N97, which does just about everything your heart could desire.

More and more people are expecting more from their phones.

...Avi Greengart, analyst at Current Analysis, sees a fundamental shift in the mobile industry that has only just begun. "We've gone from an era of hardware design where all you needed was something pretty to an era of software design where people expect to do more with their phones," said Greengart.

People still care about the look of the phone.  The "pretty" factor still exists, but not as much as before.  People want a good looking phone that does what they want.  People are no longer happy with being able to have their phone sound an alarm in the morning to wake them up.  They want to be able to go on Facebook, send email, play games, and sync to their computers.

What does the future hold for cell phones we can only wait and see.  If it continues to progress as it is now there is no telling what we can expect.

  • It's Friday again.  It's also one week closer to the holidays. This week I thought we'd discuss gift ideas.  Yes, it's going to definitely involve cell phones.

This week specific will be the top 10 cell phone must haves for the holiday season.

    10 - Sony Ericsson W610
    09 - Sony Ericsson C905
    08 - Blackberry Bold 9000
    07 - LG KS360
    06 - Nokia 5310
    05 - Nokia N95 8GB
    04 - Motorola V3 Razr
    03 - Sony Ericsson W810
    02 -  HTC G1 Google Phone
    01 - Apple iPhone 16GB

The above list  is only a suggestion but we feel it's a complete list.  It has many options like the 8MP C905 or the hot G1 from HTC.  There are also a few old fan favorites like the W610 and the W810.  They might not have any majors bells and whistles but they definitely have stood their ground.  There is even the KS360 which is a inexpensive slider phone that was missing from the line up for the longest time.

If you want any advice on which phones to ask for this holiday season don't hesitate to call, email or chat with one of our representatives.  They are standing by to make those holiday wishes come true.

    Happy Holidays from Puremobile.com!!!

  • So the big news of the week...  the new Nokia N97.  The phone that is set to be the  iPhone killer.  Well this does certainly seem like it has a lot of potential.  It's being described as a Nokia 5800 on steroids.

The Nokia N97 has already started to create a huge amount of buzz.  Not only does it come with the standard quad band phone with 3G but it adds a whole host of features that make it the iPhone killer.

Now what makes it an iPhone killer?  Is it the Bluetooth with A2DP for stereo music with wireless headphones?  Is it the fact that it supports MMS?  Is it the fact that is has a 5MP camera?  Could it be because it takes video at 30fps?  Maybe it's the 16GB MicroSD support?  Or the 32GB of internal memory?  Well the short answer is yes.

With all the features mentioned above the Nokia N97 seems to have everything the iPhone has and more.  Currently the iPhone has up to 16GB of internal memory with no memory card support.  The N97 has 32GB internal and that can be expanded up to another 16GB with the microSD slot.

Other features are the 3.5mm headphone jack so if you feel the need to have wired headphones to listen to music you can use any standard ones.  Even the touch screen seems to be well done.

People are starting to get their hands on demo units and puremobile.com will get Nokia N97 in stock as soon as it is available.  We will have a full review as soon as we get our hands one.
